The other night at a Mexican restaurant I saw an item featuring “hubiscus”. This ingredient was featured twice in the dish, spelled the same way both times.
This morning, lying in bed before the alarm rang, I thought, “What if it’s not a misspelling? What if it’s a subversive political statement?”
hubris + hibiscus = hubiscus
This makes me think of a portrait of George W drawn on the front page of the Wall Street Journal with a flower in his hair. Very subversive, indeed. Those sneaky menu writers.
P.s. Hubiscus also makes me think of huge biscuits, which makes me feel kind of dirty.
